Elementary Principal, Mrs. Mathers

Hello My Name Is...

Mrs. Mathers

See our Spring News Letter here.

Character Education focuses on WC's Pillars of Character.

WC's fourth grades were selected to represent schools in Iowa by participating in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). The test were administered to all fourth graders on January 24. The NAEP assessment lasted approximately 90 minutes and students were assessed in math, reading or writing.The results are confidential, and the student's grades are not affected.

Although there is no preparation for the assessment, we ask parents to encourage their children to do their best and get plenty of rest the night before.

Winter weather is upon us. Recess, a vital part of the curriculum, is an opportunity to practice social skills and develop healthy activities; we ask students to dress appropriately for outdoor play. Please send an extra pair of socks and mittens for your child to replace wet clothing. In addition, please label each article of winter clothing because many students have similar items, and this helps to locate lost items.

A parent's involvement in a child's education is vitally important to academic success. Children who are motivated to learn will spend more time learning.

To motivate a child's reading activities encourages students to become lifelong learners.

Children that read for 15 minutes a day can increase their academic progress substantially. Research has found five ways to motivate students to read: self-selection, attention to characters of the book, personal interest, access to books, and another's active involvement.

Here are others ways that you can help your child be comfortable with reading:

Talk with your child about what he or she is reading.

Remember to take time to read daily.  Books open the doorway to wonderful adventures.

Listen to your child read aloud;      Show an interest in what they're reading;
Read with your children, or to them;     Read a little at night so they can see you read;
