“It’s a fun learning experience and I’ve learned how to play a different style of music,” says sophomore Kurt Countryman about Woodbury Central’s Jazz Band, conducted by band director Mrs. Wurth.

Sophomore Bailey Henschen adds, “Jazz band has helped me learn to read my music quicker.”

At previous contests this year, WC’s Jazz Band placed fourth at Morningside College Jazz Festival, fifth at Districts in LeMars, and second at Lewis and Clark Jazz Festival. “We work together very well,” says sophomore Christopher Mandl. “We practice hard so each of our sounds will blend well, and it creates a good sound.”

Jazz band differs from Concert Band by the style of music the students play and its fewer number of members. Recently, WC’s Jazz Band, which meets every Monday and Wednesday at 7 AM, has been practicing the songs Arnge Drank, Blue, and It Is What It Is.

Other members of jazz band also include seniors Hunter Bryan, Brady Meister, Andrew Henschen and Tyler Bauer; junior Brandon Riebesell; sophomores Jordan Martin,  Blake Erdmann, Blake Stratton, Katie Erig, and  Christopher Mandl; freshmen; Katelyn Champion, Sidnie Graff and Logan Hammond;  and eighth graders Stephanie Havlicek and Karsen Gray.
